Common Pitfalls to ADA Adaptations

Questionable or Bad Designs

Exposed Curb beside a non-standard disabled parking spot.

Stop sign actually installed in a newly constructed curb ramp.

Pitfalls to Avoid

1. Being overly creative in design.

2. Trying to improve on the specifications.

"I designed the bathroom to spec, but used a low toilet so short people and children could use it."

3. Trying to do the least possible to comply.

4. Taking the advice of the first disabled person you can find about what works for them.

5. Granting or Obtaining an exemption.

6. Thinking Logically

7. We don't have any disabled customers.

8. Breaking the approved design by minor additions.

A motel with a lateral transfer tiolet added a shelf in the access space because a disabled person complained about no where to put their things in the bathroom.

9. Not specifing the trash can location in a bathroom.

10. Putting planters by the power door switch control plate.

11. Janitors turning off power door switches.
